The Hypercar Duel

Within months of each other, two rivals redefined the road car. The Porsche 959 brought computer-controlled drive to the street; the Ferrari F40 answered with carbon fibre and unfiltered speed. Electronics met lightweight obsession — and the modern hypercar was born.

The Porsche 959 arrived in 1986 as a rolling laboratory: a twin-turbo flat-six, all-wheel drive that thought for itself, adjustable ride height, close to three hundred and twenty kilometres an hour. It was the most sophisticated road car yet built — proof that electronics could tame enormous speed.

Ferrari’s answer, a year later, was the opposite creed. The F40 — the last car Enzo Ferrari personally approved — stripped everything away: twin-turbo V8, Kevlar and carbon fibre, bare panels, no luxury. It became the first production car to pass two hundred miles an hour. Between technology and lightness, the two cars drew the map every hypercar has followed since.
