In 1908 the Ford Model T arrived, and with it the idea that a car could belong to anyone. The moving assembly line that followed cut its build time from over twelve hours to ninety-three minutes. The automobile ceased to be a luxury — and conquered the world.
Ford did not invent the automobile, nor the assembly line. What he perfected was movement: in 1913 at Highland Park, the car came to the worker on a moving belt, and interchangeable parts fell into place in ninety-three minutes. The price of a Model T fell from around eight hundred and fifty dollars to little more than two hundred and sixty. What had been a rich man’s toy became a working family’s means.
In 1914 Ford doubled wages to five dollars a day, so the people who built the car could buy it. Fifteen million were made before production ended in 1927. Roads, suburbs, filling stations — much of the modern landscape was laid down in the Model T’s wake.

لم يخترع فورد السيارة ولا خطّ التجميع، لكنّه أتقن الحركة: ففي عام ١٩١٣ بمصنع هايلاند بارك، صارت السيارة تأتي إلى العامل على سيرٍ متحرّك، وتتراصّ الأجزاء المتماثلة في ثلاثٍ وتسعين دقيقة. هبط ثمن طراز T من نحو ثمانمئةٍ وخمسين دولارًا إلى ما يزيد قليلًا عن مئتين وستّين. وما كان لعبةً للأثرياء صار وسيلةً لأسرةٍ عاملة.
في عام ١٩١٤ ضاعف فورد الأجور إلى خمسة دولاراتٍ في اليوم، كي يقدر صانعو السيارة على شرائها. صُنع منها خمسة عشر مليونًا قبل أن يتوقّف الإنتاج عام ١٩٢٧. الطرقات والضواحي ومحطّات الوقود؛ كثيرٌ من ملامح العالم الحديث وُضع في أعقاب طراز T.
